Top 10 Plays by the Celtics since the New Year

 

Since the new year has started, the Celtics have been playing like contenders. Beginning the season with a record of 18-21, they are now 31-25. With a winning streak that currently stands at 6 games, the Celtics are now in the spotlight due to their great play. With success, comes highlights, of which the team is not coming short.

Without further ado, here are my top 10 Celtics highlights since 2022 started, in no order.

10. JAYLEN BROWN DUNKS ON MO BAMBA

Jaylen brown is no stranger when it comes to posterizing another player. He has dunked on not only Lebron, but Giannis and Embiid as well. On February 6th, 2022, playing against the Orlando Magic, Jaylen Brown surprises everyone in the building with a casual dunk on the 7-footer Mo Bamba.

 

9. ROBERT WILLIAMS CONVERTS A MEAN PUTBACK DUNK

Robert Williams is the Celtics’ newest consistent lineup addition, and he has not been shy about showing the leagues just how tough he is. During a January 10th game against the Indiana Pacers, after a Marcus Smart miss, Williams puts down the hammer over Myles Turner.

 

8. JAYSON TATUM SCORES HIS 51st POINT WITH A TOUGH LAYUP

Tatum has scored more than 50 points 3 other times in his career. After an isolation and dribbling around his opponent, he finishes in traffic to reach 51 points against the Washington Wizards.

7. ROBERT WILLIAMS BLOCKS SHOT TO SEAL AND WIN GAME  

As if playing like an All-Star wasn’t enough, the Celtics big had a big moment against the Charlotte Hornets, where he blocked the player PJ Washington’s shot to prevent the Hornets from scoring, with 30 seconds left. This block gave the possession to the Celtics, and they ended up taking the win.

6. JAYLEN BROWN BEHIND THE BACK PASS TO RICHARDSON IN OVERTIME

Jaylen Brown exploded for 50 points against the Orlando Magic on January 2nd of this year. In OT, he dished a behind the back pass to Richardson for an easy layup with about a minute left in the game.

5. MARCUS SMART SAVAGELY SWATS SHOT

Defense is half the game yet gets none of the praise. Marcus Smart is always trying hard on defense, providing aspects of play that you cannot just see from reading the box scores. In a recent game against the Brooklyn Nets, Smart goes toe-to-toe with another unfortunate guard in a layup attempt. Marcus came out the winner.

4. PAYTON PRITCHARD HITS A SMOOTH HEAVILY CONTESTED JUMPER

Payton Pritchard has shown to be an asset to the team. A hardworking talent who scored 91 points in a Pro-Am game last year, he showcased a glimpse of his potential during a game against the 76ers on January 14th. He scored 17 points, and had 3 rebounds with 4 assists.

3. JAYLEN BROWN CROSSES OVER TYLER HERRO, HITTING A CONTESTED JUMPER

Jaylen Brown had 29 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals against the Miami Heat on January 31st. In the second quarter, he isolates against Tyler Herro, freezing him with dribble moves and a quick crossover to hit a mid-range shot.

2. BRUNO FERNANDO FLIES FROM FAR AWAY TO DUNK ON DAY’RON SHARPE

Even though he was traded just after this game against the Nets, Fernando had a sweet send off. Even after demolishing them, with a minute and 50 seconds left, and up 30 points, nothing was held back. How poetic, especially after what happened during the 2021 playoffs.

1. JAYSON TATUM FRIES JOSH HART WITH LETHAL DRIBBLES AND HITS A FADEAWAY IN HIS FACE

During a game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Jayson Tatum gets the ball and does a series of dribble moves leading to a fadeaway shot over Josh Hart.

 

HONORABLE MENTION - ENES FREEDOM FREES A THREE AGAINST THE NETS

While Freedom was a controversial player during his multiple tenures on the Celtics, he left the team with his last shot bringing the Celtics together.

Who is Payton Pritchard?

Payton Pritchard is a third year NBA player who was drafted by the Boston Celtics. He’s 6’1, 195 lbs, and full of energy. The 2020 Draft Prospect page on NBA.com for Pritchard has him at 6’2, 206 lbs. They list his strengths;  Confident ball handler, passer and shot maker. Creates space with hesitation dribbles and burst. Has deep shooting range and a quick release. Plays with poise and tenacity.   All of which have been ringing through, especially as of late. From when this article was being written (3/25/22), Pritchard has shot 58% from the three-point line in his last 5 games. He also had 2 games of perfect shooting. This season, he is shooting an elite 40% from beyond the arc. From the free-throw line, he is a perfect 100%. Clearly, the man can shoot lights out. If his offensive pace keeps up, he will carve out a nice role not only on the Boston Celtics, but the NBA as a whole, as an elite shooter who can give you plenty of buckets at any time. Was the Derrick White Trade Worth It For the Boston Celtics? Who is Derrick White?

The Derrick White trade was a surprising one when it was first broken during the chaotic times of the trade deadline. Boston exchanged Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, and two picks for Derrick White. Since the trade, the Celtics have won 10 out of the last 12 games they’ve played. He has averaged about 10 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, and 1 block. Shortly after the trade, in an interview, head coach Ime Udoka said that “He checks a ton of boxes. He's a perfect fit on and off the court. A guy who's going to come right in and be selfless, work hard offensively and defensively. He'll do a lot of things for us -- another guy with good length who can add versatility to our group.” With their recent elevation of play, Udoka looks like he was right on the money about Derrick White.
